Four corporate, finance and infrastructure partners from Motta, Fernandes Rocha – Advogados have left
to join antitrust-focused firm Sampaio Ferraz Advogados.
Luis Wielewicki, 40, Bruno Furiati, 36, Beatriz Trovo Pontes de Miranda, 35, and Rodrigo Maia, 35, begin work at Sampaio Ferraz today, bringing four associates with them. All four partners bring expertise in capital markets, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, project finance and infrastructure.
The new partners drastically expand Sampaio Ferraz’s practice offering. Sampaio Ferraz is best known for its competition practice, although it also offers counsel in regulatory, administrative and infrastructure projects.
Wielewicki says the group decided to switch firms because they preferred the level of partner integration the smaller firm offered. At Sampaio Ferraz some offices are shared between partners, while the number of lawyers is much smaller than that of Motta Fernandes. Sampaio Ferraz counts 19 lawyers, while Motta Fernandes’ headcount is almost 100. “We are all very happy with this move,” says Wielewicki. “Sampaio Ferraz has a portfolio of transactions of the same nature as ours,” he adds. He also highlighted Sampaio Ferraz’s partners’ strong academic reputation as another reason for joining.
The group has valuable experience in debt restructuring, one of the more active practice areas in Brazil today. Wielewicki, Trovo and Maia were recently hired by Latin America’s largest construction company, Odebrecht, for an issuance of new debt in relation to its 11 billion reais (US$3.4 billion) extra-judicial debt restructuring – one of the largest out-of-court restructurings to take place in Brazil. The trio have worked with Odebrecht on other occasions – such as in 2014, when the engineer landed a concession to construct a new subway line in Sa?o Paulo as part of a three-company consortium.
Other transactional work by the group includes Wielewicki and Trovo’s advice to Concessiona?ria Aeroporto Rio de Janeiro, the consortium tasked with upgrading Rio Galea?o international airport ahead of this year’s Olympics, which the pair advised on a limited recourse bridge loan.
Motta Fernandes retains a long list of reputed finance and corporate partners. The firm did not comment on the
departures before publication.
